After throwing his axe to claim Kerala from the seas, the sage Parasurama built 108 Durgalayas across the length and breadth of the land. The Cherpu Bhagavathy Temple is considered to be the greatest of them all. The divine Mother presiding over the grand and gorgeous temple set amidst the verdant greenery and the tranquil settings of Cherpu Padinjattumuri has been showering her benign blessings on her dear devotees for thousands of years. Bhagavathy, the divine consort of Lord Siva, acts as the host of the 2000 year old Peruvanam Pooram and is also a leading deity of the 1400 plus year old Deva Mela – the Arattupuzha Pooram. The temple had been one of the main centres of Yajurveda for hundreds of years – the Othuttu at the temple considered second only to the Murajapam at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram.
